Vitamin contents
Fiber, protein, vitamin C, vitamin b5, calcium, sodium, folic acid, copper, potassium, and magnesium are all present in starfruit.
History
The Portuguese first came across the fruit in India. It was called carambola in India, and this became the name used by the Portuguese. The word “carambola” is derived from the Sanskrit karmaranga, meaning “food appetiser”. The Portuguese took the fruit from India to Africa and South America. When it reached Europe in the 18th century, it was considered a fashionable fruit and was served only in exclusive restaurants.
Regions
Star fruit is native to Southeast Asia but traders over the centuries introduced it to many parts of the world. Nowadays major producers of starfruit are Australia, the USA, Malaysia, India, Israel, Taiwan, Guyana, and the Philippines.
Flavours & Texture
The starfruit has a pleasant and unusual taste which resembles a mixture of pear, apple, grape, and citrus family fruits. Its texture is similar to that of grapes and its flesh is very juicy, firm, and crunchy.
Preparation
Starfruit is entirely edible. It can be enjoyed raw, in salads, juices, and in desserts. It makes a great replacement for apples in many dishes.
We recommend cutting off both ends and the five edges. Starfruit is best enjoyed when the edges start to turn brown. If multiple brown spots begin to appear around the inner crevices, then the fruit is past its best.
