Mangosteen

Introduction

Mangosteen is an exotic tropical fruit known as the “Queen of the Fruits”. It has a hint of sweet and sour and tastes like a delicious mix of lychee, peach, strawberry, and pineapple. The bottom of the mangosteen has a tiny wooden flower design indicating how many pieces are on the inside. 

Vitamin contents

Mangosteens are remarkably nutrient-dense. They are high in antioxidants, fibre, protein, and vitamins C, B9, B1, B2, manganese, copper, and magnesium.

History

The mangosteen fruit is thought to be extraordinarily challenging to grow the tree from which it is developed. Seedlings are brittle and quickly die. It may take the few that do mature up to 15 years to produce fruit and even longer to propagate.

Regions

Originally grown within the tropical climates of Southeast Asia. Significant amounts are produced in Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Puerto Rico.

Flavours & Texture

It has a slightly sweet and sour flavour and its flesh is very juicy and delicate. Its taste has been described as a mix of lychee, peach, strawberry, and pineapple.

How to eat?

Use a small and sharp knife and make a shallow cut around the equator of the fruit. Hold the bottom of the fruit in your palm and twist off the top half to expose the aril sections as the skin is not edible. 

Preparation

It can be eaten raw, in a fruit salad, in desserts, and in savory dishes. It could also be added to juices and smoothies!
