Clusiaceae
Royalty of the tropical understorey — the mangosteen family.
The family
Clusiaceae is a small but mythical family, and mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is its undisputed monarch. A dense, port-purple shell hides snow-white segments arranged like garlic cloves. The flavour reads as lychee meets peach meets perfumed sorbet — softer than tropical, sweeter than citrus, and impossible to describe until you've had one in your mouth.
Try thisMangosteen ripens off the tree — give it 2–3 days at room temperature; the husk softens from rock-hard to yielding.
