Annonaceae
The fruits that taste like dessert before you've done anything to them.
The family
Annonaceae is the family that took the idea of custard and grew it on a tree. Soursop, cherimoya and custard apple all share lumpy green skins and a soft white pulp that scoops out like ice cream. The flavour pulls from pineapple, banana and pear all at once, with a floral aromatic top note. Mark Twain called the cherimoya "deliciousness itself" and we're not arguing.
Try thisPress the skin gently — if it gives like a ripe avocado, it's ready. Chill, halve, spoon.
