Arecaceae
Fruits that grow on palms — snake fruit, dates, coconuts.
The family
Arecaceae is the palm family — and its strangest edible ambassador is the snake fruit, or salak. Each pod is wrapped in a brown, scaled skin that genuinely looks reptilian, and inside is a dry-crisp flesh that tastes of pineapple, molasses and a hint of vanilla. Dates and coconuts share the lineage but salak is the show-stopper.
Try thisPinch the pointed tip until the scales crack, then peel away like a hard-boiled egg.
