Bromeliaceae
One of the few fruits that bites you back.
The family
Bromeliaceae is the pineapple family — terrestrial cousins of the air plants and Spanish moss you'll spot on holiday. Pineapple itself is loaded with bromelain, an enzyme so active it tenderises meat and tingles the tongue. Baby pineapples are sweeter, lower in acid and edible core to crown, which makes them a far smarter choice for a fruit board.
Try thisTwist the crown off before storing — it actually helps the sugars settle through the flesh.
